Sad news; On top of everything, this guy was a pretty good surfer too.

A freakin' STINGRAY? Jeez out of all the dangerous animals he's snuggled with the poor bloke gets snuffed by an ankle biter. It's kind of like getting your jugular torn open by a shitzu. Possible, but come on!

Really sad.
Only 1 other death ever recorded from a sting ray. Total freak accident. That guy tickled the pitbull an awful lot though. Unfortunatly he finally got bit.

Freaky thing is he wasnt even messing with the ray as he normally does with animals when putting on a show. From what I read so far, Steve and the camerman were snorkling shooting video on broken reef with patches of sand in about 3-5' of water and the ray was buried in the sand, they knew it was there and were floating by taking video and as steve was floating over the top it just freaked and whipped the tail up and struck him directly in the heart. Steve yanked the barb out but died almost on the spot. A freakin one in a billion accident!

Obviously I have never met the man, but damn I feel like he was a close family member, I am really going to miss him. I hope Australia gives him a proper funeral. RIP Steve.

i think i saw an old episode of him surfing in indonesia in his khakis...
what a trip...but he surfed way better than me...
having done the stingray city thing in grand cayman and been marked by their love bites...plus dating a woman whose one foot ended up smaller than the other after an encounter with one as a girl...i have a healthy respect for them...
