Recs on beginner breaks?

Postby nenuphar » Mon May 03, 2004 6:15 pm

Hello from the mainland! I'm a member of the Half moon bay surf group here in California. bbrrrrr. I'm looking to visit your island mid-july for 2 weeks to stoke in warm waters. I'm very much a beginner (less than 6 months) and a longboarder, and would love your advice on best places to surf and stay. I'd be glad to exchange surf spots here, if you don't mind wearing a 4/3 armor. Thanks!

Aloha Nenuphar!
Good ol' Waikiki is absolutely the best place to learn. You can rent a pretty good board right on the beach, ($15 for 2-3 hours) and hit Canoes. Super easy, mellow wave with 300 of your closest friends. (I jest, though it is a bit crowded..but hey, everyones a beginner so it's cool..) You can rent lessons if you're inclined. A teacher will go out with you and help you get waves and keep you relativly safe from harm.
If you check out Hans Heidemann's school, http://www.hhsurf.com/
they'll probably take you to Tongs, which is a tiny bit more advanced, but not too scary..also get the Fireman's school, http://www.hawaiianfire.com/
and they'll take you to Barber's Point..a bit further off the beaten path, but plany local kids learned to surf there. You'll have a blast..warm water and should be choke waves in Summer.
Owoooooooo!!
